Students wanted for Winter Seattle Area Archivists Meeting

January 21, 2010 by seattleareaarchivists

Are you a student in the greater Seattle area in a graduate program with some emphasis in archives?  Maybe you are in library school, museum studies or in an archives and records management program and have just finished an internship.  Perhaps you are working on a thesis or research project.  Or you volunteer in your university’s Special Collections or Archives department.  Whatever your angle: we want you to share your experiences with us!

The focus of the Seattle Area Archivists’ winter meeting will be student presentations.  We will be hosting a meeting in early March and are hoping to put together a panel of 3-6 students.  Each student will have about 10 to 20 minutes to present on their topic of interest.  We offer in return a welcoming environment for you to practice your presentation skills and network with local archivists.

Interested yet?  Send a short description of your proposed topic as well as any A/V needs to seattle.area.archivists@gmail.com by February 12th.

Mosaic and F. Gerald Ham Scholarships Available Financial assistance for graduate education in archival science

CHICAGO-The Society of American Archivists (SAA) will award up to two Mosaic Scholarships and two F. Gerald Ham Scholarships in 2010 to students pursuing graduate education in archival science. Both scholarships provide financial support and encourage students to pursue a career as an archivist.

In its second year, the Mosaic Scholarship grants $5,000 in financial support to minority students, while promoting diversification of the American archives profession and the American historical record. It will be awarded to selected applicants who demonstrate potential for scholastic and personal achievement and who manifest a commitment both to the archives profession and to advancing diversity concerns within it. Awardees will also receive a one-year membership in SAA and complimentary registration to the Archives*Records/DC 2010: the Joint Annual Meeting of the Council of State Archivists, the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators, and SAA.

The F. Gerald Ham Scholarship offers $7,500 in financial support to graduate students in their second year of archival studies at a U.S. university. Selection criteria include the applicant’s past performance in her or his graduate program in archival studies as well as faculty members’ assessment of the student’s prospects for contributing to the archives profession.

“The Mosaic and F. Gerald Ham Scholarships both foster the growth of the archival profession,” said SAA President Peter Gottlieb.

For more information on eligibility requirements and application procedures, visit http://www.archivists.org/recognition/. The application deadline is February 28, 2010.

The 2009 Mosaic Scholarship recipients were Janet Ceja of the University of Pittsburgh and Harrison W. Inefuku of the University of British Columbia. Andy Jonathan Uhrich of New York University won the F. Gerald Ham Scholarship in 2009.

The Society of American Archivists is a Chicago-based national professional organization representing more than 5,500 individual and institutional members. Founded in 1936, its mission is to serve the education and information needs of its members and to provide leadership to ensure the identification, preservation, and use of the nation’s historical record.

http://aeri.gseis.ucla.edu/fellowships.htm
Deadline for Application: January 4, 2010

About the Fellowship

Doctoral Fellowships are currently available through a new eight-campus initiative for individuals who are interested in pursuing careers as educators and scholars in the field of Archival Studies and who would be entering a doctoral program in Fall 2010.

The Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI) Fellowships are aimed at strengthening doctoral-level education in Archival Studies, building the cohort of archival educators and increasing its diversity, and promoting a broad base of rigorous archival scholarship.

Before applying for the Fellowship, applicants are encouraged to review the scope of the eight participating programs and to consider applying only to those that best match their personal intellectual interests. To learn further information about the participating institutions and their specializations in Archival Studies, including links to their program’s homepage, visithttp://aeri.gseis.ucla.edu/institutions.htm.

Eligibility

The Doctoral Fellowships are open to all citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. who exhibit interest in the field of Archival Studies, broadly defined, and evidence of the ability to excel as a scholar and educator in the field. Applications are particularly encouraged from individuals who are of American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander heritage.

Applicants need not have received a master’s degree in an Archival Studies, LIS or other field, unless that is required by any of the participating programs to which they are applying. However, applications will be ranked based on evidence of the applicant’s commitment to Archival Studies education, potential to make a strong scholarly contribution to the field of Archival Studies, and commitment to diversity within Archival Studies education and scholarship. PAHR needs YOU!

November 23, 2009 by seattleareaarchivists

This following is a letter from Scott Cline (Seattle Municipal Archives) to the Northwest Archivists membership. You may have already seen it, but it is important enough to see again.  Contact your Senators and Representatives!

I am writing in my capacity as a member of the Society of American Archivists Council. As you know, proposed legislation known as Preserving the American Historical Record (PAHR) has been introduced in Congress. The bill would provide federal formula grants to every state for projects that preserve historical records and make them more accessible.

PAHR has enthusiastic support from the archives, library, history, and museum communities. What it doesn’t have, yet, is enough sponsorship from with Congress. There are currently 45 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives; none of these representatives are from NWA states. In the Senate, only Orrin Hatch has agreed to sponsor the legislation.

NWA has officially given PAHR its support and is so noted on the PAHR website. But what we really need is support and sponsorship from our Senators and Representatives. I encourage NWA to ask its members to contact their Senators and Representatives and request sponsorship of the PAHR legislation. This is particularly important in the Senate. If any NWA members have personal relationships with their Senators or their staffs, we request that they make contact on behalf of PAHR.

The PAHR website (http://www.archivists.org/pahr/index.asp) includes information about contacting Congress, talking points, tips for effective contact, and draft letters. PAHR Task Force chair, Kathleen Roe has indicated that this is a particularly critical time, especially regarding attaining Senate support.

Please consider sending a call-to-arms email to the NWA membership on behalf of PAHR and the future of the American record.

Sincerely,

Scott
