We hope to see you tomorrow for our Seattle Area Archivists meeting.

When: March 11, 2010 10:00-11:30

Where: University of Washington Special Collections classroom in the basement of Allen Library South

What: Short business meeting followed by presentations by Nicolette Bromberg and Hannah Palin.

Presentation Descriptions:

Discovering Viretta Denny, and how she kept growing on me–literally!
Nicolette Bromberg, Visual Materials Curator at UW Libraries, Special Collections, will talk about her experiences when she uncovered (and kept uncovering) a collection of photographs by an early Seattle photographer.

Films, Football, and Raccoons
There were always rumors about the Intercollegiate Athletic Film Collection, that a treasure trove of films documenting the UW’s athletic history was buried somewhere in Husky Stadium. In early 2009, Hannah Palin, Film Archives Specialist at the UW Libraries, Special Collections, met with representatives from the Intercollegiate Athletics Department to discuss a project to evaluate, inventory, and make recommendations for the care and storage of the department’s films. At that meeting, Ms. Palin was taken to the fabled storage room in Husky Stadium, containing hundreds of boxes filled with thousands of films and videotapes. The rumors were all true. Ms. Palin will discuss the Intercollegiate Athletics Moving Image Project in detail and will touch on issues of preservation and access in regard to large moving image collections.

Note that the focus of the meeting has been shifted: since we didn’t get a hearty response from student presenters, we will be treated to an inside look at two visual collections in the Special Collections department at UW. Nicolette Bromberg will share an acquisition story about a collection of materials from an early woman photographer, Viretta Denny; Hannah Palin will talk about the appraisal and eventual acquisition and inventory of large sports film collection.

More details will be forthcoming.

Are you a student in the greater Seattle area in a graduate program with some emphasis in archives? Maybe you are in library school, museum studies or in an archives and records management program and have just finished an internship. Perhaps you are working on a thesis or research project. Or you volunteer in your university’s Special Collections or Archives department. Whatever your angle: we want you to share your experiences with us!

The focus of the Seattle Area Archivists’ winter meeting will be student presentations. We will be hosting a meeting in early March and are hoping to put together a panel of 3-6 students. Each student will have about 10 to 20 minutes to present on their topic of interest. We offer in return a welcoming environment for you to practice your presentation skills and network with local archivists.

Interested yet? Send a short description of your proposed topic as well as any A/V needs to seattle.area.archivists@gmail.com by February 12th.

October is upon us and with it comes a flurry of activity: it’s the start of the school year and the beginning of a new membership year for the Seattle Area Archivists. October is also Archives Month: what a great time to kick off the new year!

If you were able to make it to Austin last month for the Society of American Archivists annual meeting, or if you’ve glanced at the current archival literature, you know that “Web 2.0″ is a hot topic. If you haven’t come into contact with Web 2.0 in your professional life, maybe you have used it personally by interacting online by way of social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace; or maybe you’ve shared pictures with the help of Flickr…if you are even reading this blog entry, you are using Web 2.0! A few sessions at the SAA meeting were dedicated to the use of Web 2.0 in archives while others couldn’t help but touch on it.

SAA is offering a web seminar called “Introduction to Web 2.0 in Archives…Or What You Need to Know in a Nutshell”. We’d like to offer this web seminar as part of our fall membership meeting live during its transmittal on October 13th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This is earlier in the day than our usual meetings, but participating in the live broadcast allows us to ask and get answers from the instructor, Kate Theimer, a trained archivist and blogger on ArchivesNext. Following the seminar, we could have a brief round table discussion to talk about how your colleagues are using or are planning to use this tool.

Seattle Area Archivists will pay for the registration fee for the class–all you need to do is show up! What I need to know from you is how many of you would like to participate? Would you be willing to come to either the seminar, the round table discussion, or both? Leave your comments here or email me (emily.dominick@providence.org) or any of the steering committee members with any questions. Once we have adequate feedback, we’ll make arrangements and send out a follow-up message.

I look forward to your feedback and hope to see you in October!
