NWA Funding Awards Announcements

Are you a grad student interested in exploring a career in archives?

NWA’s Student at Large scholarship offers an annual $500 in funding to encourage graduate students to pursue their aspirations for a career in archives. Up to four scholarships may be awarded each year.

Are you an archivist interested in taking a course or training whose employer pays little or nothing toward professional development? If so, apply for the Professional Development Scholarship.

NWA offers an annual $500 scholarship to enable practicing archivists to attend workshops, institutes, conferences, or other training opportunities. This scholarship was designed to provide professional development funding to practicing archivists who are self-employed or who receive inadequate financial support for professional development. Up to four scholarships may be awarded each year.

The deadline to apply is March 1.

Get money from the Continuing Education Fund! We’ve helped fund unconferences, SAA webinars and in-person workshops in the past. We’ve even helped fund a read-along book club for AK archivists. Each state is allotted $500 per year. Not sure how you can make it work or just have a kernel of an idea? Just email and we can work with you to get your continuing educational proposal off the ground.

Maintenance Culture: Seattle Skillshare & Workshop

Maintain Culture is hosting a workshop aimed to increase small cultural heritage institutions’ capacity to preserve complex, born-digital, creative work on April 12-13, 2023 at the Seattle Public Library.

Maintenance Culture is a project by Myriad, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities to address challenges related to preserving complex, born-digital, creative works in small institutions. Myriad and collaborators will create and present an innovative and collaborative digital preservation training program, expanding on existing curricula to specifically cover preserving time-based media, art, and other complex born-digital works.

Archie Motley Memorial Scholarship Applications Solicited

MAC is soliciting applications for the 2023 Archie Motley Memorial Scholarship for Students of Color (http://www.midwestarchives.org/motley). The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to students of color pursuing graduate education in archival administration and to encourage ethnic diversification of the MAC membership and of the archival profession. Two $1,500 scholarships, accompanied by one-year memberships to MAC, will be awarded. 

To be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must be of African, American Indian, Asian or Pacific Islander, or Latinx descent; must be a student currently enrolled in or accepted in a graduate, multicourse program in archival administration; and must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in their academic program. If the program is not listed in the SAA Directory of Archival Education, http://www2.archivists.org/dae, the applicant must provide proof of the multicourse standard by submitting copies of course descriptions from the institution’s current departmental catalog.

Applications are due March 1, 2023 and must include the following documents:

  • Completed application form, available at http://www.midwestarchives.org/motley
  • Transcript from the applicant’s most recent academic program (unofficial transcript is acceptable)
  • Essay of not more than 500 words outlining the applicant’s interests and future goals in archival administration
  • Two letters of recommendation.

SeArch Winter 2022 Quarterly Meeting

Seattle Area Archivists is excited to host our Winter 2022 Quarterly Meeting! We will be meeting virtually (via Zoom). Please feel free to share this event with your colleagues.

WHAT: Engage with your archives and cultural heritage colleagues, maybe win a prize, and listen to special guest speaker Scott Cline about his tenure working at Seattle Municipal Archives, the origin and history of Seattle Area Archivists, and his new book Archival Virtue: Relationship, Obligation, and the Just Archives.

Scott Cline is one of the original founders of Seattle Area Archivists and was City Archivist for Seattle for over three decades. We will have a Fireside Chat with Cline about the history of Seattle archives and SeArch. He will also present his new book Archival Virtue where he “explores ideas of moral commitment, truth, difference, and just behavior in the pursuit of archival ideals” (SAA Press Release).
