2010 Doctoral Fellowships in Archival Studies
http://aeri.gseis.ucla.edu/fellowships.htm
Deadline for Application: January 4, 2010

About the Fellowship

Doctoral Fellowships are currently available through a new eight-campus initiative for individuals who are interested in pursuing careers as educators and scholars in the field of Archival Studies and who would be entering a doctoral program in Fall 2010.

The Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI) Fellowships are aimed at strengthening doctoral-level education in Archival Studies, building the cohort of archival educators and increasing its diversity, and promoting a broad base of rigorous archival scholarship.

Before applying for the Fellowship, applicants are encouraged to review the scope of the eight participating programs and to consider applying only to those that best match their personal intellectual interests. To learn further information about the participating institutions and their specializations in Archival Studies, including links to their program’s homepage, visithttp://aeri.gseis.ucla.edu/institutions.htm.

Eligibility

The Doctoral Fellowships are open to all citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. who exhibit interest in the field of Archival Studies, broadly defined, and evidence of the ability to excel as a scholar and educator in the field. Applications are particularly encouraged from individuals who are of American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander heritage.

Applicants need not have received a master’s degree in an Archival Studies, LIS or other field, unless that is required by any of the participating programs to which they are applying. However, applications will be ranked based on evidence of the applicant’s commitment to Archival Studies education, potential to make a strong scholarly contribution to the field of Archival Studies, and commitment to diversity within Archival Studies education and scholarship. Visithttp://aeri.gseis.ucla.edu/2009.htm to learn about the scholarship from the 2009 AERI that represents diverse perspectives from students and practitioners in this field.

Fall Meeting 2.0

October is upon us and with it comes a flurry of activity: it’s the start of the school year and the beginning of a new membership year for the Seattle Area Archivists.  October is also Archives Month: what a great time to kick off the new year!

If  you were able to make it to Austin last month for the Society of American Archivists annual meeting, or if you’ve glanced at the current archival literature, you know that “Web 2.0”  is a hot topic.  If you haven’t come into contact with Web 2.0 in your professional life, maybe you have used it personally by interacting online by way of social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace; or maybe you’ve shared pictures with the help of Flickr…if you are even reading this blog entry, you are using Web 2.0!   A few sessions at the SAA meeting were dedicated to the use of Web 2.0 in archives while others couldn’t help but touch on it.

SAA is offering a web seminar called “Introduction to Web 2.0 in Archives…Or What You Need to Know in a Nutshell”. We’d like to offer this web seminar as part of our fall membership meeting live during its transmittal on October 13th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  This is earlier in the day than our usual meetings, but participating in the live broadcast allows us to ask and get answers from the instructor, Kate Theimer, a trained archivist and blogger on ArchivesNext. Following the seminar, we could have a brief round table discussion to talk about how your colleagues are using or are planning to use this tool.

Seattle Area Archivists will pay for the registration fee for the class–all you need to do is show up!  What I need to know from you is how many of you would like to participate?  Would you be willing to come to either the seminar, the round table discussion, or both? Leave your comments here or email me (emily.dominick@providence.org) or any of the steering committee members with any questions.  Once we have adequate feedback, we’ll make arrangements and send out a follow-up message.

I look forward to your feedback and hope to see you in October!

Workshop instructor, Gary Menges, is Preservation Administrator at the University of Washington Libraries, Seattle. He is a member of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works  Collections Emergency Response Team (AIC CERT).

The “Protecting Library & Archive Collections” workshops are presented in a 2-part sequence to produce the following outcomes for disaster preparedness activities:

  • Complete a disaster plan by the end of Part 2.
  • Learn how to train staff to implement your plan effectively.
  • Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for your collections.
  • Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an
     emergency.
  • Experience salvage procedures for books, documents, and non-print media.

The workshop days are scheduled several weeks apart. Participants will prepare short assignments prior to the first session; between sessions, they will undertake additional assignments resulting in a completed disaster plan at the end of Part 2. Upon completion, the institution will be invited to join an informal network of WESTPAS trained personnel to provide mutual aid in the event of emergencies involving collections in the region.

Who should attend:
Administrators and staff responsible for emergency preparedness, response and decision-making, in all types of libraries and archives. By registering for the workshop, the institution commits to supporting the attendee(s) to achieve the workshop’s disaster preparedness goals. When possible, please send two attendees from a library or archive so they can work together on the disaster preparedness activities.

Cost:
No charge to the institution.  Funding provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The workshops are co-sponsored by the Washington State Library and Washington State Archives.
