Seattle Archives Fair – Thursday, October 28

Join us for the annual Seattle Archives Fair on Thursday, October 28th, 2010, at the Seattle Public Library’s Central Branch. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We are happy to have as our guest speaker this year Randall C. Jimerson, author of Archives Power: Memory, Accountability, and Social Justice (2009), Professor of History and Director of the Archives and Records Management MA Program at Western Washington University. The Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 10th level, near the Library’s Hugh and Jane Ferguson Seattle Room, with Professor Jimerson speaking in the Library’s auditorium from 10:30 to 11:30. If your organization includes an archives collection that is open to the public and you would like to participate in the fair, table space will be available for display boards and literature. The Library also has Wi-Fi if you would like to bring your laptop to show off your repository’s website. Display space is limited, so please contact Janette Gomes at janette.gomes@kingcounty.gov or 206-205-1398 as soon as possible to reserve a table. Volunteer Archivist Position – Gage Academy of Art

Description:

Gain valuable archival experience while giving back to the community by gathering, arranging, describing, and making available the records of the Gage Academy of Art in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle.

Duration: Negotiable

Schedule: Negotiable

Collection Size: Approximately 5 or 6 cubic feet with new material coming in every quarter

The perfect person for this position should:

  • Possess knowledge of archival and records management principles and techniques.
  • Be comfortable with little supervision and formal direction.
  • Be able to find archival solutions without dedicated resources (funds, staff time, etc.).
  • Be able to communicate archival procedures and instructions to and work with academy staff.

Tasks:

Refolder and merge incoming records

Develop a plan for electronic archival records storage

Process a small collection of historic photographic prints

Create detailed instructions for staff and student volunteers

Work with the Seattle Public Library on the donation of printed material

    Vera Archives Concert Poster Show – This Week – September 9th from 5 to 8 PM

    Thursday, September 9, 2010 – 5:00pm – 8:00pm

    ZAPP and the Vera Project present a living history project featuring a personal selection of show posters, audio, photos and other special finds accumulated during Vera’s 10-year history.

    Curated by intern Tom Heuser under the guidance of professional archivist Josh Zimmerman, the project features posters from shows Heuser has attended, misprints and bands he likes, including posters from local bands, such as The Murder City Devils, to nationally known bands, like Danzig.

    Select audio and a slideshow from past Vera Project shows will also be included. Visitors will have the opportunity to share and write their experiences about Vera.
